DESCRIPTION

Eon uses the most advanced form of AI to create layered Computational Linguistics (CL) data science models. CL understands text and the linguistic structure of English, similar to how the human brain reads. EPM eliminates the noise by extracting clinically relevant information from radiology reports, saves FTE time, and improves patient outcomes.

EPM is the first and only solution to identify incidental pulmonary nodules on Magnetic Resonance (MR), X-Ray, and Computed Tomography (CT) reports. This allows facilities to capture approximately 25% more incidental pulmonary nodules.

Use cases and differentiators

Users of Eon Patient Management are able to view risk-stratified patient lists and automatically schedule next steps based on clinical guidelines. For example, if a patient is identified as having a lung nodule that is low-risk, guidelines say that they should return in 12 months for a subsequent scan to ensure no changes to that nodule. The EPM solution automates all of these steps for the navigator teams.

Care navigators, pulmonologists, oncology navigators

  • Robust computational linguistics models
  • Care management support to offload nodule management to Eon teams
  • Accuracy of nodule identification, and automation of next steps
  • 1,000+ hospital and radiology center partners
  • 414 million radiology scans analyzed since 2021
  • 15.7 million abnormalities identified since 2021

A more sophisticated analysis

"The [Eon] technology is up to 98% accurate by combining artificial intelligence and computational linguistics — a more sophisticated analysis compared to traditional methods that merely read the text and identify cysts. In the body of the report of the CAT scan, there will be a mention of a cyst that oftentimes goes either unnoticed or does not get the appropriate follow-up... The program is always running, and it runs across our entire health care system. Any CAT scan or MRI that occurs across the system in the different hospitals will be brought to our queues. Then, we can filter and decide which cysts need to be flagged for a follow-up with our pancreatic oncology team.

The key is early detection. That's one of the best ways of preventing pancreatic cancers — through detecting these cysts and making sure that we intervene before they get a chance to become cancerous."

Enroll, screen, and guide care for many patients, hopefully catching more cancers early

"We're excited about partnering with Eon. Together we've developed an innovative way to quickly enroll, screen, and guide care for many patients, hopefully catching more cancers early," said Mary Reid, Chief of Cancer Screening and Survivorship at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. "We know there are thousands more patients who should be screened and aren't, or who may have nodules that we can detect before they develop into an invasive cancer. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York, we look to every way to decrease the impact of cancer on our communities, and we believe we have an opportunity to save many lives with this program."

Innovation that’s making a difference

“The mission of [this] program is to ensure that all patients with important radiology findings get the care they need at the time they need it — the first time, every time. The program and lung cancer screening program are two important ways that we can catch cancer earlier when the patient has a chance to be cured. We’re excited to work with Eon on innovation that’s making a difference by allowing our staff to manage more patients more efficiently — and ultimately saving lives with earlier intervention.”

Saving lives and improving outcomes

"There is incredible value for our patients in all of the data in the EHR. It is critical that we use next-generational tools, like Eon, to transform that data into intelligence and then serve that intelligence up to the right individuals to ensure it is actionable, saving lives and improving outcomes."

"Our goal with innovation and information technology at UCHealth is to fundamentally transform the way we deliver care," said Steve Hess, UCHealth's chief information officer. "In many cases, that is accomplished by bringing actionable intelligence to the providers, clinical teams, and patients in their natural workflows. The Eon and UCHealth teams did just that by integrating the EPM solution with the UCHealth electronic health record and patient portal."

Evidence-based guidelines surveillance

"Around 2017 or 2018, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center chose to start investing in preventative medicine. At that point in time, they partnered with [Eon], who had an artificial intelligence software that could identify incidental lung nodules, which are pre-cancerous, [and then] contact those patients and make sure that they receive the necessary surveillance so that intervention could potentially prevent lung cancer. I approached [Eon] and asked them about the pancreas because pancreatic cysts are similar to pulmonary nodules. They are the most common identifiable precursor to pancreatic cancer.

These patients deserve lifelong surveillance when the cysts are mucinous and most of the surveillance programs, in my opinion, were antiquated. We built a computational linguistics model that’s specific to [the] pancreas to: one, improve the quality for a patient population that is living at risk for the development of pancreatic cancer, to ensure that they receive evidence-based guidelines surveillance, and receive the appropriate intervention to, at times, prevent the development of pancreatic cancer."

Keeps us updated on each patient’s needs

“This system keeps us updated on each patient’s needs and situation, so we can provide the right care at the right time for every person,” said Deborah Friedman, director of oncology services at the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program. “It helps us make sure patients are coming back for the life-saving care they need, and that no one slips through the cracks.”

Multi-prong approach

"More than half of our lung cancer patients are being detected in stage I or II, when we have the best chance of treating and curing them,” said Joseph Seaman, associate chief medical officer at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and medical director of SMH’s lung cancer screening program. “Much of that is due to our multi-prong approach to not only educate and screen high-risk patients, but also proactively look for suspicious nodules in other imaging scans and chest x-rays patients complete at SMH.”

“Catching lung cancer early greatly increases the patient’s chances that it can be treated and even cured,” Amie Miller said. “And if we can diagnose lung cancer at the earliest stages, it’s going to make a huge impact.”

High level of surveillance

“This technology is relatively new in the detection of lung nodules and we are pleased to offer this high level of surveillance to the people in the communities we serve. It is important to note that this type of early detection program is not typically offered in rural hospitals.”
