"The [Eon] technology is up to 98% accurate by combining artificial intelligence and computational linguistics — a more sophisticated analysis compared to traditional methods that merely read the text and identify cysts. In the body of the report of the CAT scan, there will be a mention of a cyst that oftentimes goes either unnoticed or does not get the appropriate follow-up... The program is always running, and it runs across our entire health care system. Any CAT scan or MRI that occurs across the system in the different hospitals will be brought to our queues. Then, we can filter and decide which cysts need to be flagged for a follow-up with our pancreatic oncology team.

The key is early detection. That's one of the best ways of preventing pancreatic cancers — through detecting these cysts and making sure that we intervene before they get a chance to become cancerous."

"Around 2017 or 2018, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center chose to start investing in preventative medicine. At that point in time, they partnered with [Eon], who had an artificial intelligence software that could identify incidental lung nodules, which are pre-cancerous, [and then] contact those patients and make sure that they receive the necessary surveillance so that intervention could potentially prevent lung cancer. I approached [Eon] and asked them about the pancreas because pancreatic cysts are similar to pulmonary nodules. They are the most common identifiable precursor to pancreatic cancer.

These patients deserve lifelong surveillance when the cysts are mucinous and most of the surveillance programs, in my opinion, were antiquated. We built a computational linguistics model that’s specific to [the] pancreas to: one, improve the quality for a patient population that is living at risk for the development of pancreatic cancer, to ensure that they receive evidence-based guidelines surveillance, and receive the appropriate intervention to, at times, prevent the development of pancreatic cancer."

“This system keeps us updated on each patient’s needs and situation, so we can provide the right care at the right time for every person,” said Deborah Friedman, director of oncology services at the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program. “It helps us make sure patients are coming back for the life-saving care they need, and that no one slips through the cracks.”

"More than half of our lung cancer patients are being detected in stage I or II, when we have the best chance of treating and curing them,” said Joseph Seaman, associate chief medical officer at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and medical director of SMH’s lung cancer screening program. “Much of that is due to our multi-prong approach to not only educate and screen high-risk patients, but also proactively look for suspicious nodules in other imaging scans and chest x-rays patients complete at SMH.”

“Catching lung cancer early greatly increases the patient’s chances that it can be treated and even cured,” Amie Miller said. “And if we can diagnose lung cancer at the earliest stages, it’s going to make a huge impact.”

“This technology is relatively new in the detection of lung nodules and we are pleased to offer this high level of surveillance to the people in the communities we serve. It is important to note that this type of early detection program is not typically offered in rural hospitals.”
