Product Description:
ivWatch is a proven technology with 40+ clinical bodies of evidence, 69 global patents, over 10 million patient monitoring hours, and 300k patients monitored. The technology uses a predictive algorithm and visible and near-infrared light to detect changes in the optical properties of the tissue around an IV site and notifies clinicians in real time to check the IV site if changes are detected. The product checks the IV sit 5x per second and can detect fluid in as little as 0.2mLs of fluid, on average 2.02mLs and is 99% sensitive for 10mLs or less. With the use of early infiltration detection technology may: • Improve patient safety and outcomes • A strong return on investment and cost savings • Reduces hospital and clinician liability • Improves patient satisfaction ratings • Advances clinical competency IV extravasation injuries are avoidable with technology.

About ivWatch

IV insertion is the most common hospital procedure, yet up to 50% of them fail, often with severe consequences ranging from dosing errors, scarring, skin staining, nerve damage, amputation, and even death. Newport News, Virginia-based ivWatch is changing that.

Founded in 2010 and holding nearly 70 patents and counting, the company has developed a first-of-its-kind Class II medical device, cleared by the FDA and CE-marked, that uses visible and near-infrared light and a predictive algorithm to continuously monitor peripheral IVs to aid in the early detection of IV leakage events, also known as infiltration and extravasation.

Applied to the skin at the IV site, ivWatch sensors perform over 18,000 checks per hour for signs of IV infiltration and extravasation, notifying healthcare workers of fluid leakage outside of the vein in real time to reduce severe adverse outcomes.

In 2024, the company surpassed more than 35 clinical proof bodies. It was also named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list, the Inc. 2024 Best in Business list in the Health Products category, and was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of its 2024 Best in Business. The company also reached the Top 3 in the 2024 Startup World Cup Grand Finale, from an initial group of over 8,000 global startups. To learn more, visit www.ivwatch.com.

Use Cases

Description:

ivWatch is cleared for use on any body mass, skin tone, age group and any PIV site.

Although infiltration rates vary across studies, published evidence suggests that peripheral IV failure rates—including infiltration—can exceed 50%, with some studies reporting rates up to 80% in high-risk neonatal populations. This makes early detection and prevention a critical aspect of neonatal care.

The system scans the site five times per second, resulting in about 18,000 assessments per hour. In contrast, manual inspection of IV sites is typically conducted once per hour or even less frequently, depending on staffing and protocols. While the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) recommends routine and frequent assessments, these are still bound by human limitations and are objective. The system continuously monitors the IV insertion site and identifies subtle changes in tissue characteristics—such as fluid accumulation—by analyzing shifts in light absorption and reflection. These changes often occur before any visible or palpable signs appear.

The system provides a real-time, objective alert when tissue changes suggest infiltration or extravasation, prompting timely and focused clinician evaluation.

Differentiators vs EHR Functionality:

How Theator Stands Out from EHR Functionality

  • Automatic Video Capture & Analysis – Unlike EHRs, which rely on manual data entry, Theator automatically records, analyzes, and extracts structured insights from surgical video.
  • AI-Powered Operative Reports – The platform generates detailed, structured operative reports, reducing documentation burden and ensuring accuracy, while EHRs primarily store manually entered text-based records.
  • Quality & Performance Benchmarking – Provides deep surgical analytics to monitor compliance with best practices, unlike EHRs, which lack real-time intraoperative performance tracking.
  • Searchable, Structured Video Library – Enables on-demand access to procedural video for research, quality initiatives, and education—capabilities EHRs do not offer.
  • Enhanced Research & Training – Supports clinical research, quality improvement, and surgical education, whereas EHRs are not designed for surgical skill development or data-driven insights.
Differentiators vs Competitors:

How Theator Stands Out from Competitors

  • Fully Automated Video Capture & Structuring – Theator is the only platform that automatically records and structures surgical video across both laparoscopic and robotic procedures, unlike competitors that rely on robotic telemetry or manual capture.
  • Unbiased, Vendor-Neutral Platform – Unlike competitors tied to specific robotic systems, Theator is independent, offering comprehensive coverage across all surgical instruments and devices.
  • AI-Powered Operative Reports – Theator automates operative reporting, eliminating manual documentation and improving accuracy, a feature competitors lack.
  • Integration with the Full Patient Journey – The platform connects intraoperative video to patient history and outcomes, enabling insights into length of stay, complications, readmission, and re-operations—beyond what competitors offer.
  • Tailored for Daily Surgical Workflows – Supports residency programs, M&M meetings, quality initiatives, and research, transforming video capture into actionable insights, unlike solutions focused solely on surgeon metrics.
  • Enterprise-Level Analytics – While some competitors are surgeon-centric, Theator provides hospital-wide analytics to improve quality, operational efficiency, and financial performance at scale.
  • Collaboration & Real-Time Insights – Theator enables comments, collaboration, and notifications on surgical events, a capability missing from other platforms.
  • Seamless EHR Integration – Theator integrates with hospital EHR systems, ensuring structured surgical data is easily accessible—a capability most competitors lack.
  • Flexible, Fully Managed Deployment – Unlike solutions requiring on-prem infrastructure and maintenance, Theator is cloud-based and fully managed, reducing IT overhead.
